What is a Toner and Why Do You Need One?
The Hair Colour Experts at Stephen Young Salon in West Wimbledon Explain What a Toner is & Why You Should Use One
Have you ever seen someone with brassy yellow or orange hair? We don’t mean a fashionable orange or yellow, but what is often known as a "bottle blonde". This often comes about because they didn't use a toner after bleaching their hair.
Toner is a brilliant little product which neutralises orange and brassy yellow tones on bleached hair, leaving you a more natural looking blonde, which looks shiny and full of health.
At Stephen Young Salon in West Wimbledon we use the very highest quality toners to ensure you always have sensational hair colour when you leave our salon.

What Do Toners Do?
Toners work to alter the undertone of a hair colour, without lifting the shade. Toners are applied to bleached or naturally blonde hair, but will not work on darker hair. Toner can help you manipulate the shade of your blonde hair helping it to look cooler or more ashy in colour. Your Stephen Young colour expert can even use a toner to add fashion colours to your blonde hair - including pink, blue or lilac tones.
Toners can either be used all over your hair, or in certain parts where you want to change the shade. For example, toner can be used at the roots to blend hair colours, such as with a balayage hair colour service, or used to tone down highlights.
What Kind of Toner Should I Use On My Hair?
Once you have had your hair lightened at our West Wimbledon hair salon, your colour expert will use one of our toners, which are designed to minimise damage to coloured hair. Your Stephen Young stylist will work with you using products which work to strengthen and repair damaged hair during the lightening process. For hair that has already been damaged we may recommend one of our fabulous in-salon treatments.
To maintain your hair colour and keep brassiness at bay, we would recommend that you use a purple or silver shampoo once a week at home.
How Do I Maintain My Toner?
The less frequently you wash your hair, the longer the effects of your toner will last so your hair colour will still look radiant. We would advise against every day washing as it will strip your natural oils from your hair and dry it out - after bleaching your hair you will want to keep it as hydrated as possible. You should not wash your hair directly after toning because the hair colour may start to slip out.
Depending on your hair washing routine, you may have to visit Stephen Young Salon in West Wimbledon for a toner from 2-8 weeks after your hair colour service to freshen up your hair colour.
Are Toners Just For Blondes?
Toners should be used on bleached or naturally light hair but you can get a wide range of colours using a toner. Whether you want to use a toner to add fashion colours, browns, reds, warm honey to light ash blonde, and even silver hair colours to your hair, you should speak with a Stephen Young expert who will be able to advise which toner would be ideal for you.
Deep Conditioning for Bleached Hair
Bleach or ammonia can cause your hair to become dry, leading to damage. Therefore it is a great idea to keep it moisturised in between salon visits. Use a deep conditioning mask once a week at home and ensure you are using products to inject moisture deep into the hair and book in for a regular deep moisture treatment at Stephen Young Salon in West Wimbledon.
